Reading a status label: Recruiting, Active, Completed and the rest

On a public study record, a short status label tells you where the study is in its life. The words are simple, but they are specific.

Summary

  1. Recruiting means the study is currently seeking participants.
  2. Active, not recruiting means enrollment is closed but the study is still going.
  3. Completed, Terminated, Withdrawn and Suspended describe how a study ended or paused.

Section 1.0

Before and during

Not yet recruiting means the study has been registered but has not begun enrolling. Recruiting means it is currently looking for participants. Enrolling by invitation means a defined group is being invited.

Section 2.0

Closed but still running

Active, not recruiting means the study has stopped enrolling, but participants already in are still being followed or treated.

Section 3.0

Endings

Completed means the study ended as planned. Terminated means it ended early, often with a reason listed. Withdrawn means it was dropped before enrolling anyone. Suspended is a pause.

Section 4.0

A caution

Status labels are updated by the sponsor, so they can be out of date. The study contact listed on the record is the one to ask. We do not look up studies for anyone.
